Garrett County After-school Extension Project Contact: Ann Sherrard, Community Project Director, anns@umd.edu Tammy Humberson, Community Project Coordinator, tammyh@umd.edu Project Description: The CYFAR New Communities Project in Garrett County will meet an identified need by bringing the resources of Extension into the new system of after-school programs across the county. The resources made available include use of an outdoor education center, computer lab, life skills curricula, and the expertise of the 4-H Youth Development educator and program assistant. The After-school Extension Project will bring Extension staff into partnership with many other youth-serving organizations as part of a coordinated after-school effort. Community Description: Maryland’s western-most county, Garrett County is a mountainous area lying in the Northern Appalachian region. The entire county is classified as rural. Much of the population lives in wooded or farm settings or within the eight incorporated towns scattered across the county. Problems associated with low-income and low education levels exist for many county residents. Garrett County is known for having the highest elevation in Maryland and record snowfall levels. The natural beauty of the area and rural heritage make the county an appealing location for residents and visitors.
