Frederick County Sagner PAL Center Technology Club and William Lee Computer Center Contact: Rebecca Davis, Extension Educator, 4H Youth Development rdavis3@umd.edu Project Description: The Sagner PAL Center Technology Club serves youth primarily between the ages of 7-12 who live in the Sagner housing units where the PAL Center is located. A 4-H educator provides informal instruction to youth on software applications and educational computer games on a weekly basis from 4-8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. At the Sagner computer center youth are encouraged to use the computers for homework assignments and learn basic computer skills and software. After participating in instructional activities, youth can earn time to play computer games and learn about computer applications. The Lee Computer Center 4-H Club is located in a Housing Authority computer lab at the Taney public housing unit that is designated as a youth facility Monday between 3-6 p.m. The 4-H Club meets weekly and participates in computer-based activities using the 4-H computer curriculum, among other resources. The Club has been meeting since August 30, 2004. Community Description: The community living in the Sagner public housing units is a low-income, primarily African-American population. The PAL Center is open to all youth living in Frederick City. The Taney public housing unit (William Lee Computer Center) serves residents of the adjacent public housing apartments as well as the surrounding community. This population is generally low-income and racially diverse. Community Partners Community partners include: the Frederick City Police Department, City of Frederick Housing Authority, Eudora Technologies, and the Carroll Creek Rotary Club. |
